Daniel C. Peterson – “Humble Apologetics”

June 28, 2012 by Bryce Haymond 10 Comments

This blog will not always have posts about temple studies, I admit, as there are other things that are at work today, about which I feel I must write a little.  They keep in the same genre of sustaining and defending the Church and its members.

Over the past few days I’ve never heard so much negative criticism of the Maxwell Institute and FARMS, in the various venues online.  You’d think BYU had been harboring a criminal all these years.  Even Mormon apologetics in general is now taboo, unfit for the Church, a view which even some members are advocating.  The fad of the week is to say that “FARMS-style” apologetics is hurting the Church, is damaging to members, destroying their faith, is a losing affair, and does nobody any good, and that’s why its remaining vestiges were finally eradicated, wholly and completely from BYU.  Even the Brethren must be against apologetics and the apologists to allow, nay, to cause, nay, to be the force behind, nay, to have directly requested what happened at the Maxwell Institute last week.  Ousting Dan Peterson and stopping the work of “FARMS” must have been the goal of BYU and the Church all along.  It’s so clear now in hindsight.  The very first moderated comment on my last post?  “FARMS was an embarrassment.”

Of course, nothing could be further from the truth.  They even go so far as to determinedly conclude that it is Mormon apologetics, in fact, that is having a negative influence on the Church, which you’ll notice is completely backwards from its true meaning and purpose.  Indeed, they are saying that the defenders are now essentially those doing the damage, which is almost comical in its twistedness. June 30, 2010 by Bryce Haymond 1 Comment

Another great video from David Tayman and David Larsen from their series of videos on the ancient temple. This one begins a discussion of the three degrees of glory, focusing first on the bronze laver.

Feel free to share with us your thoughts in the comments below.

Temple Video Series: Part 1 – Sacred Space

April 22, 2010 by Bryce Haymond 3 Comments

David Tayman from the blog Visions of the Kingdom, and David Larsen from Heavenly Ascents, have teamed up to produce a series of short YouTube videos on the ancient temple.  The focus of the presentations will be to explore the nature, function, doctrine and ritual of the ancient temple.  This is done with the purpose of providing a richer experience and understanding to our modern temple worship.  They are very well done, with great sound, video, and narration.  I will feature them here as they are produced.

Thanks to the Davids for providing these fantastic videos! Did you gain any new insights from the video above? Feel free to share with us your thoughts in the comments below.

Store Owner Commands Robber to Leave in the Name of Jesus

January 27, 2010 by Bryce Haymond 4 Comments

I received an email today of this interesting video clip.  It is a news story from earlier this month of store owner Marian Chadwick from Frisco, Texas, who encountered a hooded robber that entered her store with a gun.  The gunman walked up to the store counter and demanded money.  The store owner pointed at him and commanded him, in the name of Jesus, to leave the store immediately.  The gunman took a step back and told a customer to drop to the floor.  The store owner repeated the commands.  The robber slowly backed up and fled the store.

In an interview the store owner said that when the robber was leaving he started cussing at them, “as if Satan was walking out the door.”

Temple Construction Costs vs. Humanitarian Aid?

October 16, 2009 by Bryce Haymond 27 Comments
LDS Humanitarian Services

LDS Humanitarian Services

I received a comment this evening from YouTube user JAMaddict, which stands for Jim and Pam Addict, on my video Inside the LDS (Mormon) Twin Falls Temple.  This is what they said:

It makes me physically ill to think about the “hand selected” granite flooring. What a waste, when so many millions of people need various types of aid.

Before you start going on and on about LDS’s humanitarian efforts, don’t bother! Since LDS refuses to release their financial records, no one knows for sure, but the best guess is that they give 2% of their total income to aid. That’s sickening. ((I’ve removed the moderated comment from the video page.))

This was my reply message back to them:

The LDS Church has given over $1.1158 billion dollars in humanitarian aid in 167 countries worldwide since 1985. You can see the breakdown per year here:
http://www.providentliving.org/content/display/0,11666,4606-1-2329-1,00.html

If you want to get more specific, you can see the 2008 Welfare Services Fact Sheet here:
http://www.providentliving.org/welfare/pdf/WelfareFactSheet.pdf

$282.2 million in cash donations
$833.6 million in material assistance

That includes:

  • 61,308 tons of Food
  • 12,829 tons of Medical supplies
  • 84,681 tons of Clothing
  • 5,965 tons of Educational supplies
  • 8.6 million of Hygiene, newborn, and school kits
  • 1,100,059 days of labor donated to welfare facilities

What is sick about that? ((Direct message to JAMaddict YouTube user, also known as Jim and Pam Addict.))

I might have also mentioned that anciently only the very finest materials were used to construct the House of the Lord, including gold, silver, iron, copper, timber, and stone (see this description of Solomon’s temple), and the Lord has revealed that they are to be built to the same standards today.  It is God’s House, not ours, and He will have it built the way He reveals to His prophets.

If we had spent the humanitarian aid money we have since 1985 instead on temple construction, we could easily have over 100-200+ more temples throughout the world than we have now, essentially doubling the number we have taken 179 years to build, and providing the blessings of temple worship to many more of our members ((Estimate based on Suva Fiji Temple cost, approx. $5 million U.S. dollars (http://www.fletcherconstruction.co.nz/project.php?project_id=66&archived=yes), and Brisbane Australian Temple cost, $11.5 million (http://www.lds.org/ldsorg/v/index.jsp?locale=0&sourceId=4d3619f1707cd010VgnVCM1000004d82620a____&vgnextoid=7cecc8fe9c88d010VgnVCM1000004d82620aRCRD ) )).  But our goal is not to just build temples, but to do what the Lord has commanded, “to feed the hungry, to clothe the naked, to provide for the widow, to dry up the tear of the orphan, to comfort the afflicted, whether in this church, or in any other, or in no church at all” ((The Prophet Joseph Smith, Times and Seasons, 15 Mar. 1842, page 732)).
